More people are asking AI tools like ChatGPT, Siri, and Google AI Overviews where to eat instead of scrolling Google search results.
If your restaurant’s details aren’t set up the right way online, AI assistants may never mention you. That means no matter how great your food, service, reputation or reviews are, you’re not even in the conversation.
The shift is already happening. Most restaurants aren’t prepared, but the early adopters will capture the attention (and the customers).
Here’s how to see where you stand and what to do next.
How to test your AI visibility
Step 1: See if AI can even find you
Ask Siri, Alexa, or ChatGPT:
- “Find me a dinner spot.”
- “Best [your cuisine] near me.”
- “Where should I eat dinner in [your neighborhood]?”
If you’re not mentioned, that’s a red flag.
Step 2: Check your NAP consistency
(NAP = Name, Address, Phone.) Consistent NAP data is the foundation of trust. AI assistants pull data from multiple sources. If the details aren’t exactly the same on Google, Yelp, Facebook, TripAdvisor, Apple Maps, and your website footer, the algorithms get confused. When in doubt, they avoid making a recommendation rather than risk providing wrong information.
Step 3: Look at your menu format
If your menu is only a PDF or an image, AI tools can’t read it. You need a text-based menu on your website and/or listings so AI can understand your offerings. Include descriptive dish names (not just “Fish Special”).
Step 4: Review your reviews
AI assistants prefer “top-rated” and “most-reviewed” spots. If your reviews are old, sparse, or vague, you’re missing ranking power.
Step 5: Test your site speed and mobile friendliness
Slow, clunky sites hurt your visibility (with both humans and AI).
Step 6: Check for schema markup
Schema is behind-the-scenes code that gives AI and search engines clear, structured details about a business like your hours, menu, location and services. Without it, AI has to guess (and may get it wrong). The easiest place to start is with LocalBusiness or Restaurant schema so AI sees you as a verified, trustworthy source.
